Common questions

If my dog bites a mail carrier, am I liable?

Indiana's civil statute makes the owner liable for damages when a dog bites, without provocation, a person peaceably performing a legal or postal duty (IC 15-20-1-3). Talk to an attorney about specifics.

An owner who fails to take reasonable steps to restrain a dog commits an offense if it enters others' property and bites unprovoked (IC 15-20-1-4).

At what age is the rabies vaccine required?

Three months, per the state rabies site.

Can a dog be off leash in an Indiana state park?

Only inside a camper, tent or vehicle, with narrow reservoir exceptions for hunting and training (DNR).

Will a protection dog be welcome at Spring Mill?

Pets are not allowed in the Pioneer Village there, and DNR says highly dominant or aggressive pets should stay home.

How cold is too cold?

Purdue says outdoor pets should come in below 20 F, and puppies and short-haired dogs below 40 F (Purdue).

Does the heat index matter for dogs?

It measures how hot it feels with humidity, according to the NWS. Purdue suggests exercising in the morning or at night.

Does Indiana limit breed-based insurance or housing rules?

We did not find a statute that does, so read your lease, covenants and policy.

Is the seller required to be registered?

Only commercial breeders above the BOAH threshold and brokers, per the guidance.
